Though we start many of our predictions for the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo the same way, this time I think I truly believe it: this year, at E3 2010, Nintendo's going to have a spectacular showing.
In just about three weeks, every gaming company that matters will converge in the Los Angeles Convention Center to show off what it's cooking up for the holiday season and beyond. All three console makers will be there trying to one-up each other for creative dominance, and this year Nintendo truly needs to be on the defensive.
Yes, the Nintendo Wii is still the top-selling console on the market, but the winds are changing rapidly, with both Microsoft and Sony taking precious market share with their far more capable HD systems. Both competitors will have their "expanded market" technologies – in the form of Project Natal and PlayStation Move – fully playable with a sizable library to support them. Nintendo can't garner mass-market attention at this worldwide event with ancient motion technology running at standard resolution, and Nintendo knows it.
I predict that Nintendo will come out with all guns blazing during its press conference. The company is already hitting the technology buzz-term of the year – 3D – with the announcement of its next-generation handheld, the 3DS. While Sony and Microsoft show off their 3D strategies that require consumers to purchase optional televisions and expensive glasses, Nintendo will reveal its self-contained gaming system that requires no additional hardware for the stereoscopic effect.
