It never fails, every holiday a gaming social network goes down for some unknown reason. This year's downtime goes to Nintendo's Eshop which is unavailable today for many:

Nintendo's Twitter update.

No reason is given as to why. Hackers? Or just too many people with brand new Switches trying to register? Hopefully Nintendo will give an update in the days to come.

The eShop will be closed down for Christmas, we too want to enjoy our time with friends and family.

Best regards, Nintendo.

My wild guess is that there are too many people trying to register their switch at once or many people got gift cards or something like that and decide to use it. Plus there is the possibility of some good discounts on games as well.

Funny enough, I still remember a website that actually did this. As in, had opening hours and shut the site on holidays.

Don't think they understood how the internet works.

I think the most likely chance of the eShop going down is that the eShop server got overloaded from everyone going on the eShop to buy games, and to see if there are any games which are on sale during the Christmas holiday.
