Nintendo going Digital

Nintendo plans on pushing Wii U into bold new digital territory for a console. In an investor's conference today, global president Satoru Iwata revealed his company plans to allow consumers the ability to purchase Wii U software either in a traditional, packaged form or as a digital download. The publisher plans on having this service in place with the system's launch, though indicated only first party software would be involved at this point.

The Nintendo 3DS will feature the digital/package option first, starting this August with New Super Mario Bros. 2. 3DS owners will be able to download the game to their SD card, either by signing on to the eShop or by purchasing a download code in a retail location.

No further details were given. Iwata did not indicate if Wii U would see any hardware modifications to accomodate this new strategy. Previous iterations of the system did not feature a hard drive, though Nintendo documentation stated an external, USB-based drive would be supported.

Pretty cool the 3DS is doing this, i had no idea. But paying £35 for a game you might not like and not having the chance to trade it in might be a problem.

But usually most stores do allow the customers to return it no? If not, then don't get it in my book.

Selling games makes your collection small. ;P And I like that they are doing this. So much more convenient. I can just use my debit at home rather than nag my parents to bring me to GameStop.

It is like Steam, but for the Wii U. I hope they make it possible to backup your Game to a PC, laptop, USB external hard drive, so you don't have to redownload all your games from the internet if your Wii U got stolen or broke, and you bought another one.

Maybe Nintendo make it possible for buyers to re-sell your license for the game to other players, and once the other player who bought the game pays you, Nintendo deactivates and deletes the game off your Wii U's hard drive.

Some PC software lets you deactivate your license key on your computer with software, so you can install it on other computers, or install it on a buyers computer after he payed you.
