Priced at 200 yen per month ($1.50/£1.20) or 2,000 yen per year ($15/£12), Wide Care is billed as “a flat-rate repair warranty service that can be subscribed to at any time”.

Products covered include Switch and Switch Lite consoles, Joy-Con controllers, the Switch dock and AC adapters.

On an annual basis, members can claim up to six repairs (including two that involve the replacement of the console) and up to 100,000 yen ($738/£609) in repair costs.

In addition to natural breakdowns, water damage and accidental damage are covered.

Users need a smartphone or tablet with a camera function to subscribe to Wide Care, which also covers shipping costs.

It’s unclear if there are plans to launch the service outside of Japan, but we’ve asked Nintendo and will update this story if we hear back from it.

This is awesome. Not sure if they would do that for old or harder-to-fix consoles like the 3DS. I'd be fine if the Switch service were also available for a long time over the Switch lifecycle. But Japan being smaller in scale it would appear it would be easier to maintain the service without drawbacks because everything is so close.

What a rip-off, why would anyone subscribe for a send in fix it option that may never be needed? Besides, I can't imagine you can get it after breaking it and then end the service once you get your stuff back.

I think this is not that good of a deal if you are unlikely to break your Switch or you may sell it in the future because you need money to pay for rent, food, electricity, etc because you lost your job.

I don't like that Users need a smartphone or tablet with a camera function to subscribe to Wide Care. Smartphones and tablets can be expensive for people with less money.
