Time to get your hopes up, Metroid fans. The series no-showed E3, but you might be heartened by what the men overseeing Nintendo's game development had to say about it.

Cutting to the chase, they say they're talking internally about what to do about the series and that they'd like to talk about what's next for Metroid—for fans of the 2D games and the first-person Prime games—in "the near future."

You might think this is mostly obvious, but Metroid, as Nintendo franchises go, seems to have faded from being in active sequel rotation. A new Mario might be about as certain as a new sunrise, but a new Metroid game hasn't brightened anyone's day since 2010. There hasn't been a 2D Metroid since 2004.

The following is the conversation I just had about the series with Shigeru Miyamoto, who runs Nintendo's EAD development group, and Shinya Takahashi, who runs Nintendo's SPD group which oversees everything from Smash Bros. to the new Amiibo project to...that series with the female bounty hunter who can roll into a ball.

This was part of a longer interview covering other Nintendo topics that I'll be sharing in the coming days. The questions were asked in English; the answers delivered in Japanese.

give me another 2D metroid Nintendo. It's long, long, long overdue.

SOOOOOO happy to even hear something about metroid from Nintendo, even if it isn't much.

I never have gotten into the Prime series, but I LOVE the 2.D series and would love to see a 2.5D metroid game (3.D graphics and 2.D gameplay).

Nothing like what Metroid Other M was which had the camera set in 2.D at times but still let you control as 3.D.

I want a strict 2.D gameplay with no first person stuff in it, but I also just some HD 3.D graphics would just set it over the top for me, hence why I think 2.5D is the way to go here.

I actually feel the same way about the Mega Man series (particularly the X series) and heres hoping that Capcom takes a cue from Nintendo and actually reveal something for the series.

I rather not have 2.5D, give me 2D HD graphics to make it look really good.
Any reason why not?

Having 3.D graphics won't take away from the classic 2.D gameplay metroid experience, so I'm honestly curious about why you would rather not have it.

Games like Mario,Sonic, and Castlevania prove that you have have a classic game still capture what you love about the series while also being rendered in new 3.D graphics.

if it looks like anything like Megaman X8, it's going to look crap. Give me something like this:

Well to be fair that was a PS2 game, but as I said if Mario and Sonic can get it right than surely Metroid can pull it off.

Sonic Generations and New Super Mario Bros are prime examples of great 2.D nostalgic games with up to date 3.D graphics.

A Metroid game that will appeal to the fans of the 2D games and Prime series? I am so excited! It's time that Nintendo acknowledges that a new Metroid game is in development, I have loved every Metroid game (Except Other M, it had great gameplay but the story wasn't so great), and I can't wait to explore some worlds in these fantastic games!

Let's hope they have some of the original guys from the SNES release of Super Metroid about to help develop the Metroid game the fans want. I remember getting 100% completion on Super Metriod and I felt so happy. That is the type of Metriod game I really want.
