Nintendo has released a report detailing their results for this financial year's first quarter, and the Wii U seems to be doing better. Nintendo itself, on the other hand? Eh.

The star of the report is, without a doubt, Mario Kart 8, but the Wii U's numbers show improvement as well. Between April and June, Nintendo managed to move 510,000 Wii U units—200,000 more than in the last financial quarter—and sold a total of 2.82 million copies of Mario Kart 8. Almost three million in a month! That's pretty impressive.

The 3DS is also doing better, with 820,000 units sold between April and June, compared to the last quarter's 590,000 3DS units . This puts the Wii U and the 3DS at 6.68 million and 44.14 million total units sold to date, respectively.

Unfortunately, Nintendo still isn't turning a profit. According to the report, Nintendo recorded an operating loss of 9.4 billion yen in this quarter—roughly $92 million. The report attributes this, and the still relatively low sales numbers for the Wii U, to a lack of hit titles for the system (other than Mario Kart 8, obviously).

Nintendo hopes to generate more profit via a strong game lineup. The report explicitly mentions the third-generation Pokémon remakes and the new Smash Bros. for 3DS, and Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 2, and the new Smash Bros. for Wii U as games that could finally turn these losses around.

Once they get smash bros out, they should start gaining.

I say give the fans a true sequel to Super Metroid, that should bring in a lot more revenue in my opinion.

But the smash bros is also on the way, Nintendo may bounce back from this eventually.

I agree once Nintendo release more games which people actually want to play like Smash Bros, they will start making money again. I bet Nintendo will make some money if they release a 3DS TV console like how Sony release the Vita TV since people like playing games on a TV, or big screen computer monitor rather than tiny screens.

The logical business thing to do would be to drop the Wii U and start working on their next console.

But as an entertainment provider, they can't risk alienating fans that bought the Wii U. They are clearly between a rock and a hard place here as I don't think games will be enough to get them out of the red at this point. They took way too long.

I think making the next console backwards compatible with Wii U and Wii disc will not really alienate current Wii U owners as long as Nintendo still support the Wii U by releasing games for it.

If they did want to move on, they should offer a really good trade program like trade in your Wii U for the new console and only pay like 25-50 dollars.

But now they really seem to be picking up steam with the Wii U with the amibos and good games. But I imagine after the star fox game comes out the new console won't be far behind.

That's the issue really. If they release a new console, they can't afford to keep supporting the Wii U. They'll need to focus on developing games for the next console. And personally, I would be disappointed in them if I bought a Wii U for $300 only to play like 5 games on it.
