Nintendo lost a lawsuit in the U.K., in which the court decided the Japanese company is infringing on two of Philips' motion control patents.
Judge Colin Birss ruled that the Wii, Wii Remote, Wii Motion Plus controllers, Nunchuk, Balance Board, Wii U console and GamePad violate patents set forth by Philips in the U.K. However, Birss decided that Nintendo was not infringing on a third of the Dutch company's patents, which involved modeling a body in a virtual environment.
“The common general knowledge did not include a device combining a physical motion sensor with a camera and the reasons advanced by Nintendo for putting those two sensors together in one unit are unconvincing,” Birss wrote in the decision at the U.K. High Court, according to Bloomberg.
Nintendo said it plans to seek an appeal to the court's decision, as the company believes the two patents are invalid.
This isn't the only trial underway between Nintendo and Philips –– the latter filed similar lawsuits in the U.S., Germany and France in June, saying Nintendo's Wii and Wii U hardware are violating the same patents in these countries. In several cases, Philips stated, Nintendo violated the patents deliberately.
