SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is a bill currently in the US Congress, with the stated goal of curtailing copyright infringement, but with the actual effects of setting up a government firewall to block out unwanted sites, and giving the US jurisdiction over foreign sites that have anything to do with infringement of US copyright.

It is repellent.

A Reddit user discovered a document [PDF] hosted by the Global Intellectual IP Center ("Global"), from before the introduction of SOPA, urging Congress to enact such a measure. Among those corporate sponsors is Nintendo, who is demonstrably and justifiably upset about piracy, and committed to taking all the wrong steps to stop it.

Other companies signing off in favor of this anti-"rogue site" legislation, in the interest of protecting their IP online include Sony -- Sony Electronics, Sony Music, and Sony Pictures, separately. EA is also listed, along with Rite Aid (what?) and Zippo (what?)

Okay, so you already know how we feel about this thing. If you feel the same way, you can write or call Congress. November 16 saw concerted "Stop Censorship" efforts (Tumblr black-barred everyone's dashboard in protest, for example), but you can, of course, still contact your representatives. If you're outside of the US, uh, cross your fingers and hope you don't lose all the US-based visitors to your sites.

never thought I see this......

Microsoft is also in favor of SOPA. http://venturebeat.com/2011/11/18/apple-microsoft-sopa-support/

I never see this happening as well. I wonder will this make more people be fans of OnLive which has no official opinion on SOPA. Onlive is not for or against SOPA. I think OnLive would not support SOPA since they need the internet to run their buisness since it is all online based if fewer people subscribe to broadband because SOPA is blocking a lot of site.

I dislike SOPA since it could mean a lot of fan based forums, and blogs about movies, anime, music, and video games can be blocked in the US. If SOPA passes I try my best to stop buying from companies who support SOPA.

There are no words to describe how fucking pissed the whole law makes me....with shoddy (if not non-existent) reasoning behind it and a seemingly draconian air about it....it just....UGGH!!!!!

I heard this bill could potentially censor huge sites like Tumblr, Blogspot, DeviantArt, ImageShack, PhotoBucket, YouTube, and other user generated sites. It would make the internet like TV, Radio, Newspapers, and Old Media where only big companies like Disney provide most of the content, and there is no user generated content, or it becomes very strict since Tumblr, Blogspot, and DeviantArt don't want their entire website to be blocked or shut down because one member posted a copyrighted video or photo.

Indeed, I be mad if DevianArt is gone because of SOPA as well.

4Chan might also go down if SOPA gets passed since 4Chan has a lot of images which contain copyrighted images. This could mean 4Chan members getting mad, and hacking the people and companies who support SOPA.

I doubt the government would have the balls to mess with 4chan.

Indeed, but I bet 4Chan/Anonymous will DDoS/Hack with the Government if SOPA passes to defend websites which are like 4Chan, and freedom of speech online.
