Nintendo completed its 114.2 billion yen share buyback today as the company's founding Yamauchi family sold a portion of its inherited stake, Nintendo announced.

Acquired through the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the shares totaled 9.5 million, each worth a little more than 12,000 yen. Of Nintendo's outstanding stock, the heirs to former CEO Hiroshi Yamauchi owned about 10 percent after his death in September, but it is not known how much of the family's shares were sold, Nintendo told Business Week.

The buyback follows Nintendo's recent financial woes as it approaches the end of its fiscal year. President Satoru Iwata announced the company's plans for possible mergers and acquisitions, as illustrated by the aforementioned buyback, and its attempts to branch into new markets. A severe slump in the third quarter led Nintendo executives to decrease fiscal year sales forecasts, attributed largely to the company's overestimation of Wii U sales.

Good to see Nintendo keeping their stock close to home. Would anyone here buy Nintendo stock if you had the money?

I'm not sure it is the best idea for Nintendo to be spending so much money buying back their own stock when they can use their hundreds of billions of Yen for making more games, new consoles, and hiring more workers.

I won't buy Nintendo stock because I don't really trust the stock market compared to buying valuable metals like gold, silver, and rare jewels like diamonds, and rubies, or oil/gas which usually rise in value over time compared to stocks where they can be worth $100 one year, and 15 dollars after a few years like Sony.

I agree with this.

I wouldn't buy I'd probably buy stock while they're not doing so well.  I know they'll pick up again, so I'd sell it once that happens.

Not greatly knowledgeable on the stock market though XD
