First launched in 2017, the Nintendo Switch has now sold more units than the Kyoto-based game company’s previous top home console, the Wii.

“Sales [of the Switch] rose to the second-highest level ever, despite scarcity due to delays in production and distribution (especially in North America) since Black Friday,” stated Nintendo. For the Switch to do as well as it has, hampered by shortages and supply chain issues, is impressive.

In newly released sales figures, the Nintendo Switch has sold 103.54 million units worldwide as of December 31, 2021. This number surpasses the Nintendo Wii’s life-to-date number of 101.63 million units.

To put this into context, the Famicom (NES) sold 61.91 million units, while the Super Famicom (SNES) sold 49.10 million units.

Gaming is a pretty popular and trendy hobby. And it builds up over time. I'm not surprised the Wii got surpassed because the Switch is so accessible and the internet is more readily available since then allowing for easier aways to get titles on the eShop. You couldn't get Mario Kart Wii downloaded to your Wii via the Shop Channel. Now you can access almost the whole Switch library. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been around since the beginning of the Switch and has been bundled with the Switch, just like Duck Hunt/Super Mario Bros:: NES and Wii Sports:: Wii so it has to be the highest.

The recent covid madness helped for sure.
