Nintendo has filed a trademark for the name Zii, fuelling speculation of a new console in the works from the company.
Filed on October 30 this year and spotted by Siliconera, other details on what the Zii trademark could pertain to are uncertain.
Nintendo has steadfastly refused rumours that it's preparing a Wii HD, with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently saying that a new console wouldn't be until 'far into the future'.
The trademark could be little more than a move to protect Nintendo's existing intellectual properties – though such a move could be too late given the existence of Creative's Zii device.
Nintendo was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
UPDATE: Engadget has done some more digging, and reportedly Nintendo has also recently trademarked Cii, Bii, Oii and Yii.
