Considering how the 3DS didn't originally have a Mario game there at launch and hence took a while to become popular, I think Nintendo seemed to have learned a lesson from the experience.
Now:
South Korea's 3DS launch has Super Mario 3D Land as the default bundled game.
Nintendo are making a 2D Mario platformer for 3DS, presumably to do what New Super Mario Bros did for the old DS.
And a Wii U Mario platformer is in the works, possibly a 2D one, and perhaps even a launch title for the system.
Guess Nintendo have finally realised nothing sells consoles like the good old Mario series does, right?
