Nintendo has already said that it won't be talking about its new NX console until 2016, but that hasn't stopped a few tantalising details from slipping out to the press. Nikkei reports that the new hardware could use the Android operating system, as Nintendo seeks a more open platform that's already been embraced by third-party developers. We're firmly in rumors and speculation territory here, but there's some basis for the claim. Nintendo has hinted that the NX will be positioned alongside the 3DS and the Wii U, rather than as a direct replacement for either system.

I think using Android is better than using a traditional UNIX or Linux Desktop or Server based operating system like Debian or Redhat on the NX because Linux is not an easy operating system to use or modify sometimes compared to Android which seems to be easier to modify, use, and customize with custom ROMS, apps, and custom launchers. Linux's video card drivers are sometimes not very good and seem to not work as reliably as the Windows' video card drivers which are release by Nvidia and AMD/ATI.
Android also run fast on devices with less RAM, and a slower CPU and video chip because Android is designed to run well on devices with less RAM, and slower CPUs found on smartphones, settop boxes, eReaders, and tablets.
Making custom own operating system sometimes makes less sense these days when there are good free third-party operating systems like Android which run pretty well even on older hardware which have less RAM, and a slower CPU, and video chip.
Partnering with Google can also bring in a lot of gamers who buys the NX because it has Android which is probably the second most used operating system behind Windows, and has a lot of quality apps for Android. Google also has a lot of visitors to its many websites like Gmail, YouTube, Google Play, and Blogspot, so Google can provide free advertising for the NX Android console on its many sites with billions of visitors a month.
