Sony has faced system shortages in the past, but Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller says that the Vita will be different. According to Koller, production has ramped up to ensure that plenty of Vitas will be available when the system is released.

"We've increased production materially since E3," he told AllThingsD. "We learned our lesson to make sure you have enough product."

Koller also said that the Vita won't face competition from the Nintendo 3DS or games on mobile phones and tablets.

"This is a larger game experience," he said. "We think we are insulated from the competition."

The Vita will be released on December 17th in Japan, and on February 22, 2012 in Western territories.

this won't stop game stores from having shortages.

They still aren't doing that hot. It isn't what they expected, it isn't doing much better than other systems out there, and it isn't what a lot of people are going for. Many people like to play FPS games now, with good graphics, and online, with the PS3/360. Compare sales of Call of Duty to anything Nintendo through out recently. Other than Wii Sports, because it's bundled, and Mario, because that has a namesake, nothing is selling that much for the Wii. Sure, it was doing good, but people aren't using it.

It's not really next generation at all, it's just a DS with 3D. Next gen consoles are going somewhere, like improved graphics, better online, more intuitive, stuff like that.

This is great since it means fewer people will get ripped off by buying Vitas from eBay, and Craigslist since there is no shortage, so there is no reason to buy a Vita at a more expensive price on eBay because it is not available on Amazon, Gamespot, ToysRUs, BestBuy, and other stores.
