Sony has faced system shortages in the past, but Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller says that the Vita will be different. According to Koller, production has ramped up to ensure that plenty of Vitas will be available when the system is released.
"We've increased production materially since E3," he told AllThingsD. "We learned our lesson to make sure you have enough product."
Koller also said that the Vita won't face competition from the Nintendo 3DS or games on mobile phones and tablets.
"This is a larger game experience," he said. "We think we are insulated from the competition."
The Vita will be released on December 17th in Japan, and on February 22, 2012 in Western territories.
