3DS is all the rage in Japan right now. Meanwhile, the Wii is consistently in second place in console sales over there.

Time for a Nintendo console reboot with a successor to the Wii? Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper asked this very question of Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata.

Replied Iwata: "It's just four years since release. It's selling over 7 million units a year in North America, so we don't think it's at the limit. We'll make decisions about a successor system at the time when software developers cannot offer surprises (on the Wii)."

The possibility of a Wii successor has been one of the constant questions Iwata has had to address at Nintendo's quarterly earnings meetings and whenever being interviewed by business press like the Yomiuri. His response tends to be similar to the above.

In Japan, Nintendo recently announced a few major new Wii titles, including Tower of Pandora, Rhyhtm Heaven and Kirby. The latter two had been previously announced but are now on track for release this year. Pandora will arrive even sooner -- this Spring.

But Wii will probably need more than just three titles to survive for the coming year. We'll hopefully get some hints at the system's lineup at Iwata's Game Developers Conference keynote address later this week. You'll apparently be able to watch the keynote live, according to Nintendo of America's twitter (link will be provided later).

those sale numbers will drop to zero over night and nintendo is going to be oh s*** and start making Wii 2.

I call BS! Wii is in THIRD place, excuse me! PSP, PS3, THEN Wii, then DS, then PS2, then 360 (lol). 3DS will be top this week, then nothing for a few weeks, unless they ship next week too. And I don't want the WiiD until at least 2012 teaser.

I really like the Wii, and all of the games that have come out on it so far, but I definitely wish they would announce a successor to it... I'm really awaiting one

Some of the new games coming out could give the Wii a little boost. The games won't likely help the console sell better but at least keep people playing the Wii.

That's true.. Almost anyone with either a PS3 or Xbox also has a Wii..

I really like the Wii, I would love it if they made a 3d/hd wii 2 that can play movies. That would be amazing! I hope they do, and I bet the wii 2 will come out before the end of next year.

One more game to be released this year is Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, which should get many, many sales.
