The only Wii owners that encounter problems with the console's 512MB of internal storage are "geeks and otaku," going by Nintendo Europe marketing director Laurent Fischer.

The comment, as relayed by Edge, was meant to downplay criticism that the Wii's paltry internal storage could hamper the company's downloadable efforts.

Nintendo only recently launched WiiWare, its initiative to provide original downloadable games in addition to downloadable classics. Thus far, over 220 Virtual Console and 15 WiiWare titles have been released in North America, with more arriving every week.

Some of the newer WiiWare efforts, such as Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King and LostWinds, weigh in around the 32MB mark.

While the Wii's internal capacity can be expanded with an SD Card, at present, the system will only execute downloaded content if it is located within that 512MB internal block. Game saves and new Wii Channels are stored in that internal block as well.

Some developers have previously lamented the system's lacking storage capacity as the impetus to drop game features, though Vicarious Visions upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour will use the space to store downloaded songs.

However, when asked how the developer resolved those storage concerns, CEO Karthik Bala said he couldn't talk about that yet.

update:

Nintendo Europe’s senior marketing director, Laurent Fischer, has issued a statement to videogaming247 saying he regrets saying that only “geeks and otaku†care about the issue of Wii storage, and never meant to cause offence.

“I have huge respect for those who, like me, share a common passion for Nintendo and want to make it clear that I would never use and I didn’t use this terminology in such a context or way to cause offence,†he said.

“I regret that this misunderstanding has created such offence and disappointment within the community.â€

Fischer caused uproar last weekend after making the comment, and even raised the ire of David Jaffe overnight. You don’t want to raise the ire of David Jaffe.
