In fact, it used to look very much like a pop out book complete with a very distinct Super Mario World like style. Indeed, don't Mario, Luigi and Yoshi look very familiar?

Apparently it was also simply called Super Mario RPG 2 at this time, and they hadn't decided on whether to seperate the series from Square's game.

It's from the Iwata Asks interview on Nintendo's site, the one dedicated to Paper Mario Sticker Star:

What do you think of this style? Should Nintendo have stuck with it, or do you significantly prefer the final Paper Mario style?

You say it was going to be called Super Mario RPG 2... but on that picture it says Mario RPG 64. But I'm glad they went with the paper art style because those SMW sprites look so unfitting.

I have to agree with link70222 on this one.

I've never really even played the original Super Mario RPG, but I'm kind of glad that they changed it to the style it is now. It gave a good new feel to the series.

• Lol, no wonder why I saw a SMW mini Mario sprite on Google when I searched up Paper Mario. It all makes sense. I'm glad they changed the style entirely though.

..But a SMWish type of game sounds about good right now.

All that video taught me is that SMRPG is a really overrated game. I thought it was one of those games where only a handful people really like it and most people never heard of it. I mean I didn't even know about SMRPG until I watched Chuggaaconroy play it like 3 years ago.
