A study of over 2,000 adults from the journal Pediatrics indicates most parents use media rating systems to decide what to allow their children to watch, listen to and which video games they can play, but most parents surveyed would like to see a universal rating system, with the same criteria and ratings applied to all media, including web sites, music CDs, and games. If they had their way, maybe we'd all be playing PG 13 games, or R-Rated games, instead of M.
The study found that a majority of parents see room for improvement with the way the current rating systems work. Many parents feel the rating systems now are inaccurate and should be improved to help them decide what's appropriate for their children. The survey also shows that parents disagree on what is appropriate for various age groups.
Now I have to wonder, are parents lazy and don't just don't want to do the footwork of monitoring what they're children are watching or playing? Or is there a disconnect between generations that is either ignorant or intimidated by the media to a point they no longer know how to monitor it? I think a universal rating system wouldn't make sense -- music and video games aren't the same medium. Rating websites is just humorous to me.
