MOBAs, free-to-play games driving growth among core gamers.

In statements reported by UK tech site PCR, Cole said that PC games were bringing in more revenue than console games on a global basis, though he added that the recent launch of new game consoles could change things in the near future. "Among core gamers there is a heavy overlap with most console gamers also playing on a PC," Cole said. "The big difference is that consoles are now the luxury item and PCs are the necessity. Just a few years ago the reverse was true. This means PCs have the broader audience."

We sampled public data to estimate sales and gameplay info for every Steam game. The growth in PC spending is being driven heavily by the explosive growth in MOBAs like League of Legends and Dota 2, Cole said. That certainly gels with what we found in our recent Steam Gauge analysis, which shows Dota 2 dominating in a number of gameplay statistics.

I think the reason for the rise of PC gaming is because many people who own a PC has a good enough PC to play games like Dota 2, League of Legends, and the many Free to play games like Maple Story, and Runescape which can play pretty well even on computers with 3-4GB of RAM, an older video card like the Nvidia GT 620, and a cheaper dual-core AMD CPU.

Building or buying a PC for gaming is more affordable and easier because the price of desktop computers and computer parts has dropped in price more. Now you can build, or buy a Gaming PC for $400-500. There are also a lot of free videos on YouTube for teaching people how to build a Gaming PC for $350-500.

There are also a lot of Chinese gamers who prefer to game on PC because of the past console ban, and console restrictions which still exist.

I know a few hardcore PC gamers who are so pro-pc gaming they take any chance to have a swipe at console gamers with a vengeance lol. PC's are sometimes overlooked when it comes to gaming but the reality of it is, especially with the MMORPGs the PC gaming industry is massive, and it has the upside of only needing a small upgrade, rather than a brand new machine when things change like you need with consoles.

I agree there are many MMORPGs players since there are many MMORPG games. There are evenMMO which are popular with kids like Disney's Club Pengiun, and MMORPGs like Second Life which appeal to women. I saw on the news that a player in Second Life with millions of Linden Second Life money is Anshe Chung who is a woman.

Sometimes, you don't need upgrades to play newer games because you can lower the video quality settings to medium or low, and the PC game still looks good.

Upgrades are also cheaper these days with faster video cards like the Nvidia GTX 750 costing $140 . The GTX 750 is also fast enough to play Titanfall in 1080P.

Exactly, which is why PC gamers tend to start and end arguments with that.

Some hardcore PC  gamers also overclock/speed up the frequency of their CPU, memory, and video card which usually increase the frame rates, and speed of video.

Overclocking PC parts can be done pretty safely if you know what you are doing, and have good cooling fans, and heatsinks on your computer parts.

Overclocking is also free.

That is too funny. Everyone says that game consoles are way better then the PC for gaming but PC gaming still brings in more money than consoles do. I agree with alot of this. There are a lot of people who use PC's. I say there are more people using computers then there are game consoles. Usually these days it's people in their 20's and teenagers/kids that are playing consoles and the older adults sticking with computers. PC gaming is better as you don't need so many extra accesories to it.

wow, this certainly is a change...I never thought they would do better normal consoles. I thought there were more console gamers than PC gamers out there too. Guess I was wrong. xD

I think more people prefer gaming on PC because they just need to click on a shortcut for the PC to launch the game. Most PC games also don't need a disc  in the disc drive to run even games which come in disc format like World of Warcraft and Diablo 3 don't need disc.

Clicking on a shortcut on the desktop of a PC is faster and more convenient than walking to the TV room(if you don't have a TV in your room), turning on a console, picking a game disc, inserting a disc, waiting many minutes for the game to load just to play a game.

Plus, it is easier to play games with other PC gamers and friends online because most PC gamers use Windows, and many popular Windows games also have a version for Apple Mac computers which supports cross-platform play with Windows, and other OSes.

Good Keyboard, and mouse also last for many years. I have many keyboard and mouse which are almost 10+ years old, and still work great for Gaming.

I think more younger people are playing PC games these days since games like Minecraft, League of Legends, Dota 2, Runescape, and World of Warcraft is also pretty popular with people of all ages.
