Pee-wee Herman is going back to his roots. Paul Reubens has returned to his iconic character in The Pee-wee Herman Show, now running on Broadway, and HBO will air a special presentation of that show in 2011.
Reubens has a history with HBO, having starred in a special for them as Pee-wee in 1981 that helped give the character more of a high profile, before Pee-wee's Big Adventure and Pee-wee's Playhouse. Says HBO's Nancy Geller, "Before his hit series and movies, HBO introduced Paul Reubens' Pee-wee Herman to a national audience in the Young Comedians series, followed by the groundbreaking 1981 special. It's thrilling to have Paul back on the network, and it will be a blast to return to Pee-wee's Playhouse."
No exact date has been announced as yet for The Pee-wee Herman Show on Broadway, but it will shoot at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York this January, immediately following the conclusion of the Broadway engagement of the show, which ends on January 2nd.
