the percentage of assigned Mature ratings is in decline. Compared to the percentage of M-ratings doled out in 2006 (8 percent) and in 2005 (12 percent), the 6 percent of titles given an M-rating in 2007 is the lowest in the last three years. From 2005-2007, the percentage of titles that the ESRB designated Mature has declined by half.

The most common rating? E for Everyone. "While a handful of M-rated titles tend to garner a majority of media attention, the E (Everyone 6+) rating category continues to dominate," Vance notes.

Of all the ratings handed down by the ESRB, 59 percent were the E rating, with 15 percent more being graded as E10+, a rating that means the game "may contain more cartoon, fantasy or mild violence, mild language and/or minimal suggestive themes."
