Wow, $5 million is a lot of money to pay for a ransom. I wonder if gas prices will be higher to earn back the $5 million dollars.
 
That's a hell of a price but I'm sure they were losing way more with the system down. I'm guessing they will now try and find out who the hackers are
 
Sounds like that pipe line has some major tech issues going on. Hacked? No back up (since they had to pay)?

I read an article that the pipeline operator was using an outdated vulnerable version of Microsoft Exchange.

Maybe the pipeline company feels paying the ransom is the quickest way to unlock the ransomware, so they be back up and running in a few hours. The pipeline may hope the same ransomware gang won't attack them again in the future after getting paid $5 million.
