In 2008, gamers collectively spent more time with their PlayStation 2 than any other console. That's according to media research company Nielsen, whose "Top Tens" of 2008 calculated video game console usage, as well as the top PC games.

The company's methodology, also famously used in the TV industry, is to use data from households that it monitors for media usage, and then extrapolate across the entire United States.

Nielsen's data, which actually covers the period from January through October, found that PS2 users accounted for 31.7 percent of the total time played from all nationwide gamers. The Xbox 360 was the year's second-most popular console, with 17.2 percent of the time, followed by Wii at 13.4 percent.

Interestingly, Nielsen says that the first-gen Xbox currently sees more usage than the PlayStation 3, with 9.7 percent versus 7.3 percent, respectively. The GameCube still made the surveyors' list with 4.6 percent of total time, and an "Other" category accounts for the remaining 16.2 percent.

"Other", Nielsen says, includes "any other console found in the home" - it appears that the research did not include portable hardware like the Nintendo DS or PSP.

And the PS3.
Well, as long as a Sony game system won, I could care less. And, besides, the PS2 was awesome. I would've preferred this order:

1. PS2/PS3
2. PS2/PS3
3. PSP
4. Xbox 360
5. Nintendo DS
6. Gamecube
7. Xbox
8. Wii

I hope this means companies will continue to make games for the PS2 since so many people still play their PS2.

Well, if not the PS3, then I pick the PS2. It was an awesome console.

I personally think the wii sucks.
I dont know why people like it so much..

Exactly what I think! At least it's not the most bought or played system. Plus it's WAY to popular. Most my friends are OBSESSIVE!

Most people like games which are easy to learn how to play instead of spending countless hours leveling up or improving their skills, so the wii is the perfect console for them.

In other words:

Wii's are for 4yr olds.

Those little games like Wii bowling and all that just look sucky as hell to me.
Id much rather be owning some people in CoD4.

The wii is a good system for kids since the wiimote looks pretty durable, and easy to use.

Wii bowling is a good game to play with friends over, but it is borring to play by yourself.

The wii is a good console for people who grew up with nintendo "mario, zelda, duck hunt", and people who are new to gaming since it does not have as many buttons like the PS3, or 360.

But the controls are more difficult to use. Like in Brawl, the Wiimote sucks with it. The Gamecube controller is easier to use. Same with RPG's.

About 99% of games have customizable controls (Including brawl). Also, games like CoD are more enjoyable on the Wii for me since its more realistic (Realistic controls>realistic graphics).

Nintendo is doing new things, they shouldn't be criticized for it.

Also, if something is for 4 yr olds, why are you complaining? There are 4 yr olds and people your age. Not everything has to be designed for you.

What I want to know is why people like sony. They've done things like pay people to write bad reviews about good games.

Sony have a few good simulation games like Gran Turismo, Ace Combat, and their RPG games like KH, FF, and Dragon Quest are pretty good.

I always loved the ps2 for thier wide selections of games and had the best computing power around, since i had the ps1 i had to get the ps2, mostly for Twisted Metal: Black but then it led to 203 more games (collected through me and friends who didn't want thiers.)
