Sony's an enormous multinational conglomerate. Some perspective on just how big it is: Sony's ranked 105 on the Fortune Global 500 (for 2014), has its hands in everything from chemical manufacturing to financial services to Hollywood films and employs over 140,000 people. Of that number, just 8,000 people make up Sony Computer Entertainment -- what's better known as the PlayStation brand. And that small group of people is now largely responsible for the near future of the mothership. In short, Sony's leaning on its PlayStation arm to buoy the whole company's financials for the next several years. No pressure!

This is good news for Sony Playstation owners since it could mean that Sony will make more games, and accessories for PS4, and stop wasting money on smartphones, tablets, and TV which don't sell as well these days compared to other brands.

good news indeed.

They had an app that allowed android and ios users to purchase PS1 games to play on their devices through emulation. But it never really took off and so they shut it down.

They also do have an app (for android at least, not sure about ios) that allows users to control their PS4 system, view/send friend requests, view game invites, buy games on PSN and have them download to PS4.

But they've been doing well with Playstation. They just need to keep marketing it, making new (and great games) and people will continue to buy it.

Though a lot of reason why Sony's other areas haven't done so well is because they've kind of lost sight of the market and what consumers want. I mean the new walkman they made costs 1200 USD. How many people do they think really want to spend $1200 for an mp3 player? How many do they honestly expect to sell? (I don't expect them to sell many at all.)

Similarly their TV line focuses largely on ultra high end displays, 4K or Smart TVs for the most part. With very little real focus on the much more affordable entries like the R series. (On their website, they have only 2 TVs under $400. Everything else is over a thousand dollars.) Most people don't want ultra high end TVs they want more affordable TVs. Which is why names like Insignia, RCA or Dynex seem to be more popular. (They all offer TVs for under $200. I mean Insignia you can get a 28" TV for $190... )

The other reason they tend not to sell well is because they don't market very much. Have you ever seen an ad for the Xperia Z3 phone? I ask because I haven't.
I didn't even know the Z3 had come out yet. (I thought it was due out this June... But in truth it released in September 2014.) And even then I had to looking to even find out that the Xperia Z2 was a competitor to the Galaxy S5 and Note 3. Which is not something they really want. If they expect to sell products they need to ensure people know those products exist to even consider.

sounds like from things that playstation has always been their focus because they always promote playstation. Granted, they dropped the ball on their handheld.

They did have some ads explaining about it on various blogs and online stores that sold the device... They had photos explaining how it is waterproof and how you can attach it to a controller and play games on it etc. :geek:

I think the problem with most Sony electronic products like smartphones, smart tvs, and tablets is that they don't have a giant app and media store like the Apple App Store and iTunes, or offer a exclusive Operating System like iOS/Mac which some people want to pay to use because of its ease of use, features, and giving them access to iTunes which is one of the world's most popular and biggest media store and app store for computers, and mobile devices.

Sony products also don't look or work a lot better than electronics from cheaper brands like Vizio, Amazon, Monoprice, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Lenovo, Seiki, and other cheaper generic brands, but Sony products cost a lot more, and don't offer more nice features which people really want which are not available on cheaper alternative brands.

Plus, a lot of electronics like tablets, smartphones, laptops, and settop boxes get outdated in 1-3 years because of no operating system updates from the maker, and discontinued software updates  from app makers like how Google Chrome was never supported on older versions of Google Android like Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Hardware on mobile devices and other electronics like settop boxes are improving quickly every year, so people buy from cheaper brands since they know they probably would not be using the same device in a few years from now because of newer and better tech, so they won't want to spend too much money on more expensive products which they plan to throw out when nicer and faster products are released in a few years from now.

I reckon that Sony has done really well in the business which is good to see what else they do in the future and have released some good products. It is interesting to see how the company does, in the game world as they have made real good games and have played most of them which have done well. I reckon if they make games which are well made, and also it is nice that the games I have played have been well received and also good to play as well.

Very interesting I must say. Finally they decided to put some effort into their best seller prodct and try to give some improvements on the graphics optimization, the side where at the moment they have a big lack in my opinion. I wonder how PS4 would become after this initiative... I hope that it will be at least as good as a PC in terms of gameplay fluency and stuff.

I was a little surprised reading that to be honest because for me, the PlayStation has always been pretty well backed by Sony.

Nearly every time you see an advert for a Sony device it's the PlayStation that's mentioned and if you look how much investment has been ploughed into the series of consoles over the years, Sony are definitely taking things seriously.

Can Sony back the PlayStation even more than they have done already? If so I'd like to know in what way would that be possible?

I think one reason for the playstation's success is limited competition. We have xbox and nintendo. And each 3 consoles focuses on capturing a different share of the market in the types of games they focus primarily on, so in this way, theyre not competing "directly". A lot of gamers may want all 3 systems, where as with a DSLR camera, you don't need Nikon AND SONY AND Olympus, (and whoever else is big in this market), you just need ONE DSLR (and a ton of lenses lol). Similarly, with Televisions, yes, most families do own multiple TV sets, but I think, for the most part, a TV is something you buy once, and have for the next 30-40 years. And there are SOOOO many TV manufacturers out there, Samsung, Sony, Vizio, Huawei, Toshiba, Fujitsu, and on and on and on. There's probably hundreds of TV manufacturers.... And honestly, as long as the size of the screen is good, and color/clarity, what more does a consumer want in their TV? Do we really care about "smart" TVs? I dont own one and I see no need to own one. /shrugs. A regular flat screen TV has come WAY down in price as technology becomes cheaper to manufacture. I bought my HDTV about 12 years ago when Flat screens had just come to the market. It's only a 32 inch (I need to upgrade eventually), and at the time, 12 years ago, I paid over $800 for it on a Black Friday special. Now, similar size TV's cost under $200. And prices will continue to fall. Computers are the same way, as new tech comes out, old tech will have to be discounted to continue to sell units. Sony Vaios are awesome looking and fashionable, but they are very overpriced for what you actually get inside of the shell.

PS Now on a PS system is just semantics. Their goal was always to reach the people that don't own consoles. And they must be making some headway since they just made a deal with Samsung.

I'm a playstation man through and through and I wouldn't buy into this.

Don't get me wrong, it's not because it's bad. But because I don't need it.

I have a PS3, PS4, and a Vita. So I personally don't need this

I hope they start giving discounts to plus members with this. Sort of like they are planning to do with Playstation Vue.

Or better yet, have a nice package for all of them at a decent price.
