At Sony's E3 2012 press conference the company announced that its Playstation Suite software framework has been renamed Playstation Mobile. The change accompanies the announcement of a new partnership with phone manufacturer HTC to create a line of Playstation-certified Android phones.

Any "Playstation certified" device will be able to download and play games via the Playstation Store that have been developed with Sony's Playstation Suite software framework, now renamed the Playstation Mobile Software Development Kit. Games on touch-screen devices will have virtual buttons overlaid on the screen, while devices with analog inputs like the Sony Xperia play will utilize traditional controls.

Sony had previously partnered with Sony Ericsson on creating Playstation Certified devices. Today's partnership with HTC is the first third-party agreement Sony has announced.

sounds like another PS go failure.

There's one thing i don't understand. Isn't this just creating more competition for the Vita? Or are they just trying to secure their place in the new Android gaming world?

Yeah this seems like it's not a very smart move on Sony's part. I wouldn't buy the Xperia or the Vita because there's no point. If I want to game I'll just play on my PS3 or my cellphone. I don't want to buy a new phone just to game that's lame.

It will be interesting to see what they do with this and if it is actually even decent. Probably wouldn't buy it.

I don't think I'll buy one of these phones. Personally if I want to play a PlayStation game I'd rather just use my PS3 or get a Vita. I feel phones like this are often gimmicy and substandard to the real thing. If I'm out and about I'm fine just playing casual games on my phone or tablet instead and save the real gaming till I get home. Afterall I can play android games on my tablet.

They have a grudge against Samsung. Samsung is like their direct competitor that beats them in almost everything. A recent example would be the HDTV market.
Ahh I totally forgot about that feud
Anyway Sony has only themselves to blame for the loss in the HDTV market... They and their High Priced Bravias

I like the Sony Xperia Play phone with the built-in controller, and joystick. I probably play some PS2 and Android Games for the Xperia Play if I owned one.

Wow. That video makes me hate the silly iPhone games that I am forced to play. However, I don't think that will touch the PS Vita - dual analog controller + touch screen capable seems like it is light years ahead of other handhelds. And, I don't have to worry about a phone call interrupting me. Honestly - I will be glad to be rid of the gaming aspect of the iPhone. They are really weak.

Xperia Play is convenient, but how long does someone want to play a game on a phone? The best part about iPhone games is that you can do something in that 1 minute that you have to wait, like Angry Birds, whereas a Final Fantasy game would have nothing in a minute, but rather like 10 minutes.

Sony is just getting a bit too greedy, they want to dominate the smartphone business as well, when all theyre doing is adding more competition to their vita in terms of games.
