Sony has just confirmed that the PlayStation Neo and the PS4 Slim will be the last of the "upgrades" for the PlayStation 4, signaling the could be the end of the console's cycle.

There is no release date yet for the new PlayStation Neo and the PS4 Slim but they are expected to be released this year. The bad news is that Sony has denied that they are not releasing annual or bi-annual upgrades for the console as the two will be the last upgrades for their current PlayStation 4.

Sony Executive Andrew House told investors in a Tokyo meeting that the PlayStation Neo and the PS4 Slim could be the last upgrades for the current console cycle as it would still last the usual six years, Metro has learned. He added that there would not be any change in their hardware release pattern which could also mean that the PlayStation 5 could happen soon.

What do you think of the PlayStation Neo and the PS4 Slim being the last PS4 upgrades? Looks like the PS5 will be released around 2019.

I was kind of surprised at this news. However, I think that these two upgrades are a good end for the PS4, and now they should start to focus their efforts on making the PS5 even more powerful.

It should be noted that the Neo/PS4 slim are one in the same.

And only because these upgrades are the last for the system (they always are) I still say its a good 4-5 years before PS5 comes out.

I agree also. The last generation of consoles lasted about 8 years on the market before the current generation was released in 2013. Even thought the current generation was on sale, the previous was still selling as prices dropped.

I'm amazed that both Sony and Microsoft is giving the green light to release another upgrade with the NEO and Scorpio systems. They obviously have game plans as to how they will attract buyers so early into the life of the current generation of consoles. Let's wait and see when more info is released and we can decide from there.

they are releasing upgrades to met demand of VR and 4k, nothing more to it.

Yeah I think it makes sense, really we should have the NEO or Scorpio, its just because of rapid technological change making the old systems incompatible with some new features, but anymore upgrades throughout one generation would alienate console gamers I think.

Told a bunch of my drunken family members on the 4th about a new PS4 coming out after they raved about just getting a PS4, needless to say the reaction wasn't a calm one ^^;
