PlayStation Vita Region Free

In a PlayStation Vita session for European and Australian press at E3 today, Michael Denny, Sony's Vice President of Sony Worldwide Studios Europe, confirmed that - to the best of his knowledge - Vita would be region free.

This means games from any region will play on systems from any region. This is in line with the PlayStation 3 - which is also region free, but not with the 3DS, which has region restrictions. Good news for PlayStation fans who want to check out niche Japanese titles or purchase games while travelling.

It was about time that the whole region thing started to fade away, both in games and movies. I've never understood how it was supposed to benefit the publishers in any way and it's only extra hassle for the (paying) customers. Good riddance, let's hope more companies (hello Nintendo) start to realize this kind of measures are only lead to frustration on our part.

I think it has something to do this privacy rights. While you are right that it's an extra hassle for paying customers, there are a lot of non-paying customers who would love to buy ripped games. The region restriction is one defense against illegal copying.

Finally. I kind of disliked the fact that the PS3 was not region free at the start because I wanted to buy Japanese games to play but I couldnt due to the region till they removed that. Now that the Playstation Vita is region free, I can truly enjoy all the games available out there!

This is great, specially if the Vita gets as many awesome Japan-only games as the PSP (Kenka Bancho, my love...)
