Bad news for my fellow Americans and our friends across the pond in Europe. There will be no PlayStation Vita for us this year. Sony's Kaz Hirai revealed that the handheld gaming device will launch in Japan by Christmas, but the rest of the world will be waiting until 2012, an AP report reveals.
Hirai didn't call the newly detailed release plan a "delay," though he didn't offer any specific timing for either release. The goal in waiting on the US and Europe launches, he said, is to ensure that the Vita arrives with a strong offering of game. Stop looking pointedly at Nintendo as you read this. The 3DS tried.
"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable," Hirai said this morning during a press conference at Sony's Tokyo HQ. "There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game business decided that they were going to lower their price."
The price he's referring to, first announced at E3, is $249 for the Wi-Fi-only model and $299 for 3G + Wi-Fi.
