Because I want to eventually beat Wings and Nin

Because we should all tell each other our tricks and tips to be better against other players.

For me, the obvious, if you're in first place, keep a Banana or Shell ready to block Red Shells and other incoming objects.

Keep an eye on other people's items to see if a Blue Shell will be incoming.

This is a generic tip I use throughout all of them. Take corners as tight as you can to use the walls as protection for oncoming items, like red shells. Always works a charm. Always try to use the environment as a barricade. I have dodged so many by doing this, it's so simple and most of you probably already do it, heh.

I also like to use ricocheting shells to my advantage. Try shoot them forward to rebound off a wall ahead and catch opponents by surprise, or shoot three backwards (if you're got triple green shells) while on an angle in a narrow hallway to cause hell for the people behind you.

When first, always use items when near another item box. Thats, you're holding a banana and you get another items. When you're about to pass another item box, just throw the banana, equip the reserved item, and get another one.
Unless you're near the finish line and the other racers are near you, I don't see why you should stop just because someone has a Blue Sheel. If you go straight foward, the hit won't cost you the place.

Not played, but I think the glider can be used to pass over some big locations, and come to places you wouldn't normally get to. I saw some of it in video a while ago.

The perfect item combination you can get is a triple banana with a mushroom. The bananas will shield you for three hits. If you see a blue shell coming, drop the bananas you have and dodge the blue shell with the mushroom.

Do NOT go in a launcher that activates the glider while you are about to get hit by a blue shell.

If you have the chance, drop into second before someone launches the blue shell. Keep your distance from the first place man.

If you fall off the edge, you can get a turbo boos immediately by pressing r right before you land and a as you land.

Pro-tip : You're not going to beat me any time soon.

If you spot a Blue Shell from an opponent, drop back. However, there may be times when the person in second is a mile and a half behind. This makes it annoying, slowing down and waiting for them to catch right up to you, just to zip past them again with not as much distance as before, so if you are a decent length away, KEEP GOING. Just don't take any jumps that make you go over lava or anything, because you will lose a LOT of time.

Tanooki Leafs are not useless, however when in first you should activate them as soon as possible. Remember this item stays in the item box thing at the top of the screen until it WEARS OFF. So keep it open.

Keep Items behind you. If you have, say, a Green Shell equipped and Triple Bananas spare, toss the Green Shell for the triple.

Got a Red Shell in first. Great, now KEEP IT. Ignore the above tip. If someone manages to catch you with Mushrooms or takes a good corner you may need to shoot them down.

Take shortcuts ONLY if you know you can get away with it. Don't take something that will only slow you down in the long run.

Aiming for Triple Star rank? DON'T TAKE RISKS. Don't jump over the small pits of lava at the end of Bowser's Castle, because chances are a lava plume will shoot up.

Find your own way around a course. Don't follow the CPU's, they may take a longer route.

Be careful. The CPU's are a lot smarter and take more alternate routes in this game then ever before. I've noticed them taking the Koopa Beach shortcut (the one with the ramp). I never noticed them doing this in the N64.

You can get away without changing tires. I've only used the normal tires. And I still place rather well.

Okay, listen up and listen good!
  1. See a blue shell coming and you haven't actually got that good of a lead? Unprotected? Well, drop back abit so that the people in 2nd are in the blast radius. This takes out the good racers with you, giving you a chance.
  2. Keep items behind you, don't deploy them. This blocks red shells and other projectiles, giving you an advantage.
  3. Take the inside of corners, this blocks red shells, I've had a 30% block rate with this, it's a useful strategy and it works well.
  4. Got a good item? You should try to work your way up, then use it. This will give you an even bigger advantage against everybody such as if you used a bullet bill in 3rd, etc. etc.
  5. ALWAYS keep triple green shells. These are a very reliable all-round shield. Beware: 10% of shells fired at you while you have all three on WILL go through your shield and hit you directly.
  6. Take note of the best and worst players. Target the best players to get an advantage in the lead, it'll make life easier.
  7. If you see someone with a banana behind them, and you are in a position where the opponent has a banana, shell, etc. etc. deployed behind them, and you're on a straight road, try to hit them on the side. That means doing a spot of drifting, but it works damn well.
Use Dev's tips well! And by the way, shooting 3 green shells backwards on a straight road is always bound to hit someone, like on Luigi Circut.

Here's some tips: When your glider is activated, hold the circle pad in the down direction to cover more space. This tactic will also enable you to dogde some items.
Another tip: When beginning a race during the count down, hold the A button as SOON as you see the number two. Another tip: Try to stay behind your opponents and after seconds, you'll gain speed equal to a mushroom! (For a little longer, too)

Another!

Drift until you see red sparks at EVERY chance you get.

More!

Don't get cocky... not even for a minute, because if you do, you'll get blue shelled on the final lap at the finish line. Happens a lot.
