The DragonBox Pyra is a handheld gaming device aimed at a very specific niche: folks looking for a versatile, open source machine that can run desktop Linux apps and emulate game consoles including the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo 64 and Gameboy DS.

At this point you can spend 290 € (about $330) on a voucher that will be applied to your eventual purchase of a DragonBox Pyra. The final unit will cost more than that, although the exact price hasn’t been determined yet.

Hardware includes a Texas Instruments OMAP 5432 dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 5 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel display, two full-sized SDXC card slots, a microSD card slot, a micro USB 3.0 OTG port, a full-sized USB 3.0 port, and a full-sized USB 2.0 port. The system has a 6,000 mAh battery.

I like the keyboard on the bottom of the game controller. The controller, and screen looks pretty nice.

I agree it does look kind of bulky. But, it has full size USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports which probably make it more bulky because of the size of a full size USB ports. It also has a full size SD Card slot.

This handheld console is also a Linux portable computer, so it needs a bigger size battery to play games for many hours.

Maybe the creator of the handheld made it bulky, so it is more durable and last longer because of a thicker case.

I hope it will last long as well because $330 is expensive for a handheld compared to the PSP Vita, 3DS, and Google Android handhelds which you can buy for $100-200 or less.

My thoughts exactly. Not only does it look bulky, but the design doesn't look modern at all. I would definitely not be interested in buying this console. I wonder how many they produced...

This handheld does not look modern, but this console can do more tasks which more modern looking handhelds can't do because of the limitations of the software and hardware on handhelds like the 3DS, PSP, Vita, and the restrictions which Nintendo and Sony puts on their console to prevent people from doing more tasks on a handheld like emulating games and running un-official apps on their devices, or changing the user interface of the console.

This Pyra handheld has a Texas Instruments OMAP 5432 dual-core processor, and 2GB of RAM, so it could run some desktop Linux operating systems like Ubuntu mobile or Debian which can run on mobile chips like theTexas Instrument OMAP 5432. It would be cool if Pyra used an Intel or AMD chips on future version of this handheld, so it can run more different types of operating systems, programs and games which were designed to work on AMD and Intel chips.

I think Pyra would not produce a lot, and mainly produce enough to fulfill the number of pre-orders, and build a small number of devices for people who want to not pre-order it, and wait for it to be release. Pyra may build more devices as the demand increases.

If the price was cheaper like $150-200, it will have a big demand from hobbyist, and Linux fans like the Raspberry Pi which cost $35 and is popular with a lot of hobbyist.
