The recent 3.0 update to the PlayStation 3's firmware has, in most people's opinions, improved the PlayStation 3 experience, but a small minority of gamers are reporting problems. Big problems. Some are saying that Sony's new update bricks controllers.

At first, it seemed as if the glitch seems was affecting controllers with model numbers CECHZC2H and CECHZC2U. Although, it didn't seem to be breaking every controller with those model numbers -- lots of folks with those controllers report no problems.

As more people reported the problem to the internet, and revealed their controller numbers, a clearer story started to emerge: It appears that the glitch affecting PlayStation 3 controllers is limited to counterfeit products. So if you bought a shady SixAxis from a Hong Kong retailer or off of eBay, you might be out of luck.
