Playstation gamers who use their consoles excessively risk painful lesions from a new skin disorder, doctors are warning.

The condition was identified in a 12-year-old girl in Switzerland who developed lesions on her hands after playing for several hours every day.

Dermatologists have called the condition PlayStation palmar hidradenitis and said the condition cleared up after the patient stopped paying altogether for ten days.

The lesions in the standard version of the disorder normally appear on the soles of the feet in children who play lots of sport or take part in intensive physical exercise such as jogging.

It it thought to be connected to intense sweating but it is very unusual for it to appear on the hands.

Doctors at the Geneva University Hospital in Switzerland found the girl had not played any sport and the lesions only appeared after she had started to play on her PlayStation for several hours a day.

Lead author of the case report in the British Journal of Dermatology Behrooz Kasraee said it is thought the condition appeared because of the 'tight and continuous grasping of the console's handgrips together with repeated pushing of the buttons which produces minor but continuous trauma to the palms of the hands', in addition to sweating that can occur if the player becomes anxious while playing the game.

Dr Kasraee said: "The final diagnosis in our patient was idiopathic palmar eccrine hidradenitis. However, we propose that the variant in this patient can be labelled more specifically as 'PlayStation palmar hidradenitis'. Excessive video gaming is currently regarded as an alarming health issue.

"Most of the symptoms of this type of 'addiction' are considered to be psychological...recently organic pathologies such as acute tendonitis, called Wiiitis, or video game-induced knuckle pads have been added to the list of video game-related pathologies. We report 'PlayStation palmar hidradenitis' as a cutaneous (skin) pathology induced by console gaming."

Nina Goad of the British Association of Dermatologists said: "This is an interesting discovery and one that the researchers are keen to share with other dermatologists, should they be confronted with similar, unexplained symptoms in a patient.

"If you're worried about soreness on your hands when playing a games console, it might be sensible to give your hands a break from time to time, and don't play excessively if your hands are prone to sweating."

A spokesman for Playstation said: "We firmly believe that video gaming is a legitimate entertainment pastime like watching movies, listening to music, or reading books. As with any leisure pursuit there are possible consequences of not following common sense, health advice and guidelines, as can be found within our instruction manuals.

"PlayStation was launched in 1995 and has sold hundreds of millions of consoles over the last 13 years. We will study the findings with interest, but to date this is the first time we have ever heard of a complaint of this nature."

that kid has bad luck.

I believe it's known as motion sickness - gamers having to move their hands and fingers around with the controllers for a long period of time. Some game companies have posted warning notices about this on games already.

There's a warning like that displayed in any game console manual for the consoles you get. Portable or not. I don't play video games that often, so I'm in pretty good shape as far as that goes.
