Sony's aging PlayStation 2 continues to reap success, with the console having just shifted some 50 million units in its eight years on the market in North America.

The figure was announced yesterday, presenting a more positive outlook in the wake of the recent revelation that the electronics giant is expected to be posting its first loss in 14 years. "With the lineup for 2009 and 2010, the PS2 is not going away anytime soon," said Sony's John Koller as he reiterated the importance of the PlayStation 2 to the company in an interview with gamasutra.

Despite the age of the console, there's unlikely to be a price drop for the unit over the coming year, with Koller stating that, "We've looked at a variety of options, and I think we're pleased with where we are; it's a significant financial contributor for us and it sells very well at $129.99. We're comfortable with the current price."

The global sales figure for PlayStation 2 was tagged at 140 million units as of last July.
