Just when you thought the PlayStation 2 was riding off into the sunset and letting the PlayStation 3 have the limelight, Sony dropped the price of the unit to a cool $99.99 last month. We here at IGN had some fun with the "major announcement," but it looks like we were April fools.

Yes, the sales numbers for April 2009 have been released by the NPD Group, which tracks industry sales figures, and 172,000 PlayStation 2s were moved in 30 days versus the March 2009 number of 112,000 units. That's a lot. Even NPD Analyst Anita Frazier saw the jump.

"Compared to March 2009, the PS2 sales rate almost doubled when comparing the two months on a same-week basis," Frazier said. "This is a testament to the impact a price reduction can have on hardware acquisition, with price being only second to compelling new content as a catalyst for hardware sales."

The PS2 even pwned the PlayStation 3, which sold 127,000 units last month. Congrats to all you new PS2 owners.

well anyone just getting a PS2 for the first time right now, has about 3-5 years of good gaming ahead of them.

The Xbox 360 arcade is also pretty good for youngster. I think once the Xbox 360 arcade is cheaper. It will ba a direct competitor to the PS2 slim since the Gamecube, and original Xbox is pretty hard to find in some stores.
