Sony has detailed the steps gamers will need to follow in order to take advantage of the discounted price being offered on certain PlayStation 4 games to owners of the PlayStation 3 versions.

The $10 PS3 to PS4 upgrade program was first announced by Sony at Gamescom. The offer applies to four games that will be available on both platforms -- Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag -- and works with both digital and physical copies of the PS3 game, though the process is slightly different for the two.

In the case of a physical PS3 copy, a code is included in the box that must be redeemed on the PlayStation Store (which can be done on PS3). Once that's done and you have a PS4 in your hands, you'll sign into your same PlayStation Network/Sony Entertainment Network account and find the digital PS4 version of the game in question on the Store, which will now be available to you for $9.99. After downloading the game, you'll have to insert the PS3 game disc for the PS4 digital game to be playable -- a measure presumably intended to prevent sales being lost by people getting a PS4 game for $10 and then selling off the PS3 copy to someone else.

The process for those with a digital copy on PS3 is simpler. There's no need to redeem a code; after buying the digital PS3 game, the digital PS4 copy will be available at the discounted rate and can be played without any need for a disc.

The full step-by-step instructions can be found on the official PlayStation website.

Sony notes that certain PS4 games will be available for pre-order through the PS3's PlayStation Store prior to the PS4's release on November 15. That should help make it easier to take advantage of this promotion even if you can't get your hands on a PS4 right away. It will be important to act fast, as this is a limited time offer: Gamers will have to complete the process by January 31, 2014 in the case of Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs, March 28 for Battlefield 4, or March 31 for Call of Duty.

No matter how great it is, you are still paying more for the same game.
