Some strange news out of Sony's latest financial earnings release: sales of the PlayStation 3 are down, while sales of the PlayStation 2 are steady and the PSP is making a late-life comeback!
The release covers the three months between April and June this year. In that time, the PS3 sold 1.8 million units (down from 2.4 million last year), the PSP sold 1.8 million (up from 1.2 million) and the old warhorse, the PS2, sold 1.4 million, only slightly down from the 1.6 million this time last year.
What to make of all that? With the PlayStation Vita on the way, the PSP is almost on clearance, making it a great time to grab one for new customers (it's also still going strong in its native Japan). The PS2, despite being over a decade old, is still a handy purchase with a ton of great games! And the PS3, well. That's a strange one. Don't be surprised if a price cut is announced at GamesCom in August, or the Tokyo Game Show in September.
I have a tendency to say stupid things when I get pissed at something/someone, but it's mostly anger from them not caring about their security, and how they fired the people that we're the privacy protectors, and the hacker finders. It annoyed the hell out me. All they cared about was to convince fans that they cared about them, and then stabbed them in the back.
Yeah I can get that I just wouldn't have worded it as such. They never intended to dick us over or at least I hope not. The way I see it is they were trying to stop an outcry from building up at first by keeping us in the dark but when it got out of hand they had to come clean which made them appear worse than they were for keeping us in the dark rather than straight out told us what had happened. And the flimsy welcome back package didn't help either because, while I got some free games and 2 extra months of PS Plus, I couldn't help but feel the whole scheme was just an advertisement for some of their bigger titles like LBP 2 and Infamous 2. There is always the argument though it would have cost too much to put newer titles on the store but that is besides the point really, because they wanted to reward us for being loyal for sticking with them through the blackout but didn't do the best of jobs. To be honest I understood what had happened and looked past it well before the welcome back package was announced so it was just a nice little bonus for me.
Yeah, I was wondering why they would give LBP and inFAMOUS for free, later to realize that inFAMOUS 2 was right around the corner, and LBP 2 needed more sales. While I enjoy the two free games, it was yet another plot to get more sales. It worked however!
I don't think LBP2 ever needed more sales, the success of first game guaranteed the success of the sequel, I think they just wanted to squeeze some more cash out and get more MediaMolecule fans as it is one of their biggest rising young stars in their first party developer lists.
I have never heard any complaints about sales, granted you are right LBP sales are at 4.4million while LBP2 is at 1.4million but the game's budget was not actually huge and the team making it is very small therefore reducing costs. I think it still sold well in its own right but sequels rarely do as well as their predecessor but they still do well.
I bet the removal of Other OS, the hacking scandal, and the long recovery time for PSN to be up again made the Sales drop for the PS3. I feel Sony should come out with a PS3 which is 199-220 dollar 4-20GB PS3 to compete with the Xbox 360 Arcade 4GB Slim core console, and Wii.
4GB isn't enough because every game has to be installed to the hard drive. The least they could do is 60GB, but the least at the moment is 120 or 160GB. They should cut the price of the 160GB to $200-250 however.
