We are planning to get a PS3 for Christmas as a family gift (partially because my son wants one and partially because I want one for FFXIII). So, with the different models out there, I wanted everyone else's opinion on which one is the best to get and why???

The Regular FAT Playstation 3 because it has a proven reliability record since it been out for so many years and there weren't many complaints.

I read that the PS3 Fat edition is backwards compatible with PS2 games, but I'm not sure if the newwer fats are. You should read the box before buying.

If you are want to, uou can install Linux on the PS3 Fat, but the PS3 slim does not have this capability since sony locked it.

I would buy a used OLD 60GB one. Those work best with backwards compatibility. But if your looking for a new copy, get the "Fat" PS3. They have more USB ports and they are more reliable, like Froggy said.

Thanks guys. I'm not concerned to much with backwards compatibility because we wil lbe keeping the PS2. The PS2 is in my sons room and the PS3 will be going in the living room with the Wii.

Maybe the slim will be better choice for you since it uses less electricity. However, its reliability is not proven yet since it has only been out for a few month compared to the Fat PS3 which been out for years.

QUOTE The Slim uses a lot less power than Sony have given it credit for. In standby mode, it's around 70% more efficient, while playing games and Blu-Rays its just over 50% more efficient.

I recommend buying the PS3 from Costco, or any other company that has a good extended warranty plan, so if your PS3 breaks you can use the wrannty to get another one or have it repaired.

Thanks for the info. The elcectricity usage is interesting. We were planning to get it at Best Buy (partially because I am a platinum reward zone member and partially because we've always had good experiences with them).

Last time I went to Costco, everything was over priced beyond belief!

And you have a rewards or platinum, er whatever, card.

Amazon, and Ebay has the best prices. I rarely shop at retail stores these days, but I heard that Costco is good if you buy a lot of stuff since they sell food in Bulk.

Yes, Amazon and eBay are the best. Cheapest prices. And you can find older stuff like SNES's.

I get a lot of things from Ebay and Amazon, but for big purchases (like the PS3) I prefer going to Best Buy.

I got the PS3 today and so far so good. I got it hooked up and ran through the installation stuff.
