PlayStation PS5 Won't Support SSD Expandable Storage at Launch

Sony has confirmed that PS5 will not support SSD expandable storage at launch.

As reported by The Verge, a Sony spokesperson has stated that PS5's SSD expandable storage will be "reserved for a future update," but no further window was given.

The PlayStation 5 has a dedicated internal slot that will fit a standard stick-shaped M.2 SSD, but Cerny also warned against purchasing an M.2 SSD until Sony gives official word on which SSDs will be fully supported and optimized on PS5 to give you the best performance.

Hopefully, Sony adds SSD expandable storage before 2021.

It took a while for that option to become available for PS4.
I doubt they'll take their time with PS5, they'll make it accessible much sooner.

WD announced before that their WD Black SN 850 NVMe SSD is compatible with Ps5 though.

Read currently you can't store ps5 games on external harddrive/ssd, external harddrive/ssd only works for ps4 games currently. So atm ps5 is stuck only with the default internal high speed ssd storage for ps5 games.

Sony said in an updated FAQ that Sony is looking into allowing people to eventually use external drives to store PS5 games :

Can I store or play PS5 games from a USB drive?

No, players cannot transfer PS5 games to a USB drive. PS5 games must be stored on the console’s internal ultra-high speed SSD for gameplay. Explorations for allowing players to store (but not play) PS5 games on a USB drive in a future update are underway.

You can, however, store and play PS4 games from a compatible USB drive connected to PS5.

Do they mean like a flash drive or any external storage? I mean if its an external SSD, it should work but those are a bit $$$.

All types of External Storage are not working for storing Ps5 games atm, External Storage only for storing ps4 games atm.
