Sundays are usually quiet but today PSN users woke up to find PSN down from an apparent DDoS attack which is something that can affect anything. Shacknews reports that other games like  Path of Exile, World of Warcraft and League of Legends were also attacked, but those seem to have recovered.

Sony is aware of their issue as they announced on their twitter that they are trying to get the issue resolved but something like a DDoS attack can take some time to stop.

At this time most services related to PSN are back up but the store is still down with a maintenance message showing. There is supposed to be a maintenance tomorrow but it's unknown if it's happening now or still later.

Since this is a DDoS attack, no user info is at risk unlike the 2011 PSN hacking.

The DDoS could be used to distract the tech staff while cyber criminals upload malware on their servers when the tech staff try to fix the DDoS problem. I think some DDoS bots cost money to use because you need a lot of computers and servers to overload their websites, so this DDoS could be used to distract Sony while hackers put viruses on their server. Some of the bots also maybe looking for holes and security problems on the servers to latter hack.

Experts say that DDOS attacks are increasingly used by cybercriminals as a smokescreen. This means that they’re using DDOS attacks to keep the targeted company’s IT staff distracted while they plant malware that’s designed to steal data.
