According to an article on Develop's site, Sony is planning on launching an app store for the PSP and PSPgo that will be of separate branding from the current PlayStation Store. The new downloadable games, which could come in sizes as small as 20 MB, could be downloaded quickly for instant gratification. Sony is apparently making this new initiative more approachable for the development community, too, as it will be cutting the price of its software development kit and streamlining the approval process so smaller teams can make games more easily.
Develop is reporting that several studios have already signed on with Sony to produce these games, including Subatomic Studios, CandyStand and Creat. We contacted a Sony representative to confirm if all this information is official, but we did not receive a comment at the time this article was written.
UPDATE: SCEA PR Manager Al De Leon has responded to the PSPgo story but didn't go as far as confirming the new, separate PlayStation Store space.
"We've always been focused on expanding content for PSP, and the digital business is growing, vibrant and diverse," De Leon said. "As announced at E3, we've reduced the price of PSP development tools to support the creation of smaller titles from a broader range of developers and publishers. As part of this effort, we're also streamlining the development process. More details will be announced in due time."
