The PSP Slim has sold close to 600,000 units in its first two weeks on sale in Japan. Pretty good. That beats sales numbers for the release of the original PSP in 2004. Maybe the PSP is turning that proverbial corner.
So why don't people buy them in the same numbers they buy the Nintendo DS?
I think it has to do with the cuteness factor. The DS might not be as powerful as the PSP, but honestly, most people don't care about that: Show them something adorable like Nintendogs, and that's the console they want...And when you can play it on a friendly, slick looking clamshell machine like the DS Lite, you can't keep people from buying them.
The PSP, on the other hand, is intimidating to people on some subconscious level. Maybe it's the design. Maybe it's the button layout. Maybe it's the fact that "You can watch movies on it!" and "Download songs and videos!" but all that can be very difficult. Not sure. But it's just not a friendly machine.
Rant Over. But maybe, just maybe, the PSP Slim will edge the PSP toward a more person-friendly design.
