This is my absolute favorite anime of all time (right now). The animation is absolutely gorgeous whether it's the moe-fied style with the pastels, or experimental. The music is fierce. The characters, unlike I think a lot of mahou shojou, aren't static--they're distinct from each other, but they develop in the course of the story. And then there's the story itself, which ties up everything so neatly in the end as well as reveals literal layers of motivations and events in the past and ups the rewatch value so much.
The whole thing comes together just so perfectly that I wonder how it doesn't break out of its target demographic (which I should hope isn't just very young girls like the main characters, because this is some heavy family-massacre suicide-pact tragic stuff) and become as popular as an anime of this quality should be.
And then I remember that it's actually pretty brilliantly sad and tragic and dark, which isn't everyone's cup of tea!
