First off, let me say that I do not intend to cause any flame wars. I am also not racist, I just like to have an objective mindset about certain things. Anyway, racism has existed for thousands of years and it will continue to exist for a long time. It is defiantly a bad thing. As with other biased ideas, racism started out as fear or uncertainty about a person of a different race.
We as humans tend to turn fear into anger. I don't know why, but I think it may be because we are more comfortable with being angry. When we see something that we are not used to seeing, that unsettles us, we tend to push it away or lash out at it. In the case of racism, that thing is the color of one's skin. That is the main reason why people are racist. Now people may state other reasons why they dislike a certain race such as "Black people are poor and they use drugs." or "White people are power hungry.". But they can apply both of those statements to both races. They just do not want to because they want to look right.
Racism is irrational and it has caused a massive amount of hatred among many races. It is our duty as human beings to see each other for who we really are despite our physical differences. That does not mean that one should use the race card to justify their problems. "I got thrown in jail because I'm black."
When I was at college, I asked several people who they were going to vote for. A majority of them said that they were voting for Obama. I asked them why they were going to vote for Obama, and they said because they wanted to see a black president. I then would ask them what they think of his views. Turns out, they know nothing of his views. They are just voting for him because he is black.
It seems that a majority of the black people in the U.S. tend to blame their problems on racism. The philosophy seems to be "White people are always pushing us down." That is actually the opposite of what is happening. Any hint of racism towards African Americans is covered by the media. If a black person is thrown into jail for using drugs, it is presumed to be because of race. People such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson can talk trash about the "White" race as much as they want but if anybody not black begins to say anything about the black race, they are presumed to be racist.
There is a fatal flaw in this kind of thinking because African-Americans are playing the victim. Yes there is racism in the U.S. It can't be helped because there are always going to be ignorant people out there. But one must strive to overcome such challenges instead of playing the victim. What do you want to be? The victim or the victor?
