Heritage Auctions recently sold another rare copy of Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Entertainment System for an exorbitant amount of money. $660,000, to be specific. This absolutely shatters the record for a single video game auction, which was previously held by a copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 that sold for $156,000 last November.

Much like the Super Mario Bros. that was bought for $114,000 last summer, this new copy is held in such high esteem due to its near-perfect, sealed condition and the cardboard hangtab perforation on its back. That little oddity indicates its status as part of a brief, fourth-wave production window, further increasing its rarity.

That is a crazy amount of money for a game. The theory about it being used as a way to transfer illegal money would make sense. But then again, there are people out there that will literally throw their cash away at anything.

I can believe a very rich video game collector buying this Super Mario Bros unopened game because they got a lot of money, and want this game, or plan to donate it to a museum, so people can see this game in a museum for many years to come.

Some are thinking its a illegal transfer of money between people.
I’ve seen some collectors be suspicious that there’s collusion between the sellers. The sealed collecting market is very small, and graded sealed is even smaller, and they all know each other. They think the collusion is to artificially inflate the graded market to make it more “inviting” for collectors to get into, thus increasing the value of other games.

Another reason why they’re suspicious, is that the one sold last year was a sticker sealed copy, aka the original print. Usually a first print is the most coveted one, and the most expensive. It’s almost unheard of a later print, much less a fourth print, being worth more. Especially when it’s less rare to find than the first print.

Do you know what I could buy with $660,000? I could buy myself a house for that much and still have money left over. I would rather have the money for something else than to spend it on 1 video game, no matter how rare the game might be.
