Yes, there's yet another set-top box heading into the already crowded market vying for your living room. During Google's I/O keynote this morning, Razer announced plans for a micro-console powered by the just-revealed Android TV interface.

The device--which Razer says "might look like" the rendering above--is being developed by the team behind the Razer Blade laptops and the modular PC concept, Project Christine. While there's currently no set release date, the Razer micro-console will utilize Android TV functionality when it launches, allowing you to navigate the interface with an Android smartphone or tablet.

getting to be too many of these.

Certainly an ambitious product, but I'm not sure how popular the Android based consoles really are to most consumers. Does Razer have what it takes to really draw in the crowds? Honestly, I don't think so, but that isn't to say any of the other players in this field have really done much either. Overall, it's a wait and see sort of product, but seems like these consoles are really getting rammed down our throats instead of having some sort of compelling feature that we 'must' have.

I agree that there seems to be getting a bit too many of these recently, but I think that if anyone would have any chance of success then it would be Google/Android, as even the one who started this all (OUYA) as far as I know also utilizes Android anyway, which makes me wonder what they can expect of their business when this giant comes into the small market they have built so far.

Razer micro console sounds like an interesting micro console for playing Android games like Asphalt 8, Shadowgun, and Real Racing 3 which seems to work better with a controller. I think these consoles are also good for streaming Netflix, and YouTube instead of using Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and other devices which try to lock you into a platform device instead of Android where you can buy a device like a smartphone or tablet from another maker like Samsung, LG, and Motorola if a Android device maker brand like HTC is not for you.

Hopefully, it would have a Nvidia K1 Processor/Video chip, 3-4GB of RAM, and 64GB or more of storage, and cost $99. I think the Razer console would do better because it would have full access to the Google Play store, and access to other App stores by installing the Amazon Marketplace APK file onto Android, and Ouya coming out with an App for it like how the Ouya game store is available for the Madcatz Mojo micro console now.

I think these consoles would be good for streaming PC Games from a more powerful Gaming PC with a wired or faster 802.11N-802.11AC wireless router with low lag, and fast upload and downloads speeds, or using services like Onlive to stream full PC games from the internet via Onlive's servers.

I wonder would Logitech, Nyko, Saitek and other PC and Console Gaming Accessory makers come out with a console, so their main competitors like Razer and Madcatz which also makes accessories like controllers, mice, and keyboards does not make all the mini console money.

This is their first product of this type, but you've probably seen their PC gaming peripherals. I think their gaming mouse and keyboard lineup is the most popular out there. They also make the upcoming Nabu fitness band that AC's written about pretty extensively. Obviously success in those sectors isn't a predictor of quality in this one, but they're a pretty well-respected company.

I agree Razer is pretty well known around the PC Gaming community. I wonder would this console use a PC CPU chip like an AMD or Intel chip, and PC video card by Nvidia and AMD now that Android also supports x86 PC chips from Intel, and AMD in the newer versions of Android instead of just mobile chips like chips made by Nvidia, Samsung, Qualcomm, etc.

I think this looks fun and interesting. It's a side note from all the major consoles and if people like it, then it might become a lighter gaming console than the major 3 that are up and running right now.

I don't agree that there are too many of these kinds of things, because every console made is a new step, good or bad. People can look back and remember what worked and what didn't and can advance the ones that did and improve the ones that didn't do so well. Every effort helps us all in the long run.

Razer need to get the operations to a point where they can handle what they're making at the moment, not spreading themselves even thinner.

I agree with you that having more of these kind of consoles is good since buyers are not stuck just buying consoles from 1-2 game console makers, so gamers can buy the console which they like most, and has the features and games they want at a price which they can afford instead of spending most of their savings on a console, and a few games.

I think Razer decided to make a console because they are trying to sell their consoles and devices to buyers with less money who can't afford Razer's Razerblade gaming laptop, or Fiona Gaming tablet which cost thousands of dollars. But, they are more likely to afford a console price at $100-200 which can also be used to run apps like Dropbox and Quick Office, watch Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube video on a TV or PC monitor with HDMI inputs.

I also read the Amazon Fire TV microconsole settop box is also selling pretty well on Amazon.com, so Razer might want a piece of the Fire TV userbase who are disapointed with the Fire TV, Apple TV, and other similar devices.
