Apparently due to the pandemic, Best Buy believes the future is online shopping only. So their plan of action? Fire lots and lots of store employees, employees with years of knowledge in mobile, pcs, tvs, ect were all given their pink slip in the last few weeks. The drama is real on the bestbuy subreddit.

Sad to see so many let go (some say a 3rd of their instore employees) and disgusted they do it.

This is sad news that Bestbuy would be firing their workers, and making Bestbuy mostly an online store. I had good memories of buying electronics from Bestbuy.

Hopefully, Bestbuy workers can find new jobs.

RIP Bestbuy stores.

I've noticed that Bestbuy doesn't seem to have as many employees as it use to. I just bought a computer recently and it came from Bestbuy. I thought about getting a new console from there as well, don't know if I will now.

so how badly did they push their services on you while you tried to buy that PC :p

The last time I was in a Bestbuy they had more workers on site than customers. At the very least one of them did approach me and ask if I needed anything. Unlike in previous times where I've seen up to 4 workers huddled together in an isle (often near the TVs) chatting among themselves, never once did any one of them bother stopping to ask if I needed help.
So you'll have to forgive when I say I don't have much sympathy. And looking at it from a company perspective if I saw this happen with 4 employees all standing around doing nothing, I'd want them watched on camera with an impromptu performance review to make sure they were actually working. (Like sure, I can understand one time if they're still on break or something. But I'd be willing to bet it's not a one-off.) And if not? Fired.

Most of the people believe online shopping is the only thing that can strive these days.
I am sure we don't agree with that but they have a valid point as well

With the pandemic, online shopping really did increase quite a lot so it's hard to argue with them on their point that its the future. It is a real shame them because there are still a large number of people that appreciate and want in-store shopping

I think online shopping maybe the only type of mainstream shopping for most average priced household items like books, video games, and toasters in the future because more offline stores are closing down because of the Covid19 pandemic and not having enough customers buying things from their store. I feel that starting a offline business like a book store is getting harder because it is hard to compete with the low prices for products like toys which cost less on eBay, Amazon, Alibaba, Aliexpress. Some people rather buy things from the official online store of Apple, Microsoft, Google, Samsung, etc because it is more convenient.

There most likely still be a some offline stores which sell more expensive items like gold, expensive jewelry, artwork, luxury watches, luxury cars, and boats which rich people like to try out before spending a lot of money to buy them.

Oh, they asked me if I wanted their extended warranty and all that. My hubby has a degree in electronics and he can fix my computer for me if anything needs fixing. So I told them, why do I need them to fix it when I already have a computer geek living in the house with me? It was funny......the subject never came up again.

to be fair, this is a college filled type of job, most of those standing out tend to slack off as its the only time in their busy life to do so. Certainly not an excuse but something I did during my busy days, but that only happen if the store was empty at my local Staples store.

yeah, they fired them now and will want them back later, and they won't come back.

Tbh I’ve never had those people push anything on me. I just go in and say “I want that computer” and the only thing they ask when I get rung up at the register is if I want the warranty, and I just say no.

sounds like you lucked out, or they know you well enough not to bother.

good thing you didn't go to Staples, they would have fought till the end.

Probably the latter. If you come in already decided, they don’t seem to ask a lot of questions. The one time I got a laptop at Staples, they tried selling me Microsoft Office, and some antivirus along with the warranty.

should have been selling you a lot more than that. Those sale people most likely got yelled at since they couldn't bleed you for an extra $400 on top of the laptop.

those who want to see and touch things in person.

Hearing how the key and button sounds when typing on a keyboard maybe one of the reasons someone visits a store.

I think some people may also want to pay someone to help them setup their new software like MS Office and 3rd-party antivirus on their computer before leaving a computer store.

shame to hear about that. very angry and unhappy people, I would feel the same way if I was to lose the job. I mean since the COvid more and more people and retails are fully moving to online and able to make and sell far more products online than in-store.
