British-born U.S. technology entrepreneur John McAfee died on Wednesday by suicide in a Barcelona prison after the Spanish high court authorised his extradition to the United States on tax evasion charges, his lawyer told Reuters.

McAfee's lawyer, Javier Villalba, said the anti-virus software pioneer died by hanging as his nine months in prison brought him to despair.

During a court hearing last month, McAfee, 75, said that given his age, he would spend the rest of his life in jail if convicted in the United States. "I am hoping that the Spanish court will see the injustice of this," he said, adding "the United States wants to use me as an example."

McAfee had lived for years on the run from U.S. authorities, some of that time aboard a megayacht. He was indicted in Tennessee on tax evasion charges and was charged in a cryptocurrency fraud case in New York.

The colourful tech founder was detained on Oct. 3 at the Barcelona airport as he was about to board a flight to Istanbul with a British passport, a Spanish police source said at the time.

McAfee worked for NASA, Xerox and Lockheed Martin before launching the world's first commercial anti-virus in 1987. Intel (INTC.O) bought the business in 2011, when McAfee himself no longer had any involvement. The program still carries his name and has 500 million users worldwide.

Interestingly he mentioned that he would never commit suicide and it should be investigated if it happened.
But this indictment might have been tough to take for him.

I don't believe he committed suicide after reading this. Something doesn't sit right about that. He probably would not of spent more then 3 years in prison anyway because someone like that would probably already have had a clean record or almost clean. Usually the court isn't going to give you the harshest punishment for your first or first couple offenses. I don't know if he had a clean record but someone that worked for nasa probably had almost a clean record at least.

It's my belief he was killed and they tried to cover it up. Something is leading me to speculate this based on the information provided. This happens a lot in foreign prisons especially in the country listed and I can only hope they investigate it to the fullest to find out if it did.

Grungie Grungie Well I didn't know that he had charges on his record. I know now but if he said he wouldn't kill himself is really my take on the situation. I assume it was while he was there in prison according to Ash Ash. There isn't many people who say that and then do it. I've heard about prisons around there. It happens all the time and even happened in North Korea to a U.S. citizen who went there for a college getaway. Bad things like that tend to happen. I wouldn't go forward belittling the dead myself and assuming but you have my word even if he did, it's a least suspicious.

I wasn't mentioning anything about his death, just responding to the comment about him having a clean record.
