Roller Coaster Tycoon 4 - how to ruin a franchise

Dunno if a whole lot of people here are familiar with the RCT franchise, but the basic premise is you get to run and design your own theme park. The series is mostly famous on the PC although there was a port to the Xbox back in the day. The last game to come out for the series was RCT 3 back in 2004 so needless to say I was excited to hear they were developing a RCT4.

Then the bad news came. There was going to be a mobile and PC version. Mobile came out first, costs $2.99 in the app store. That didn't seem bad for what should be a great game, but unfortunately this is actually just a freemium game that's not so free. In the game you have tons of in-app purchases, and everything has a timer (Touch Arcade review said it took 10 hours to "build" a coaster). Yuck!! Way to ruin the game. This is especially disappointing because earlier this month Transport Tycoon, a game in the same vein of RCT (the same maker did this game before the RCT series), was ported to mobile, only cost $6.99 to buy, and played exactly like the old game but with touch screen controls. Why they couldn't just do that with RCT4 is beyond me, and beyond stupid.

To make matters worse, the PC version doesn't come out till the second half of this year. On top of this, all we've heard from the developers about the PC version is that they plan to introduce multiplayer and more social features.... why can't I just play my simulation games alone??

Well I can see the mobile version sucking because mobile has nothing on... anything, but why does a simulation game need multiplayer and social feature. Is it going to be like farmville? "Hey come to my park. Guess won't appear unless my friends look at my park. Also give it a 5 star rating so I'll get more people."

Just thinking about that is horrible.

Mobile games are increasingly moving towards more and more in-app purchases, just to squeeze more money off of the players that download the games. Some games are so bad that you cannot progress without spending money.

In my opinion, any game should be completely playable without having to rely on the in-app purchases, or even forced social features.

I hope that when it makes the leap over to Android they will drop the $3 purchase price. I might be tempted to try it then. I'd rather just pay $10 to get it on my iPad and have it be a straight port of the original game, but this is a company we are dealing with and they are following the trends.

I didn't know there was a RCT4 until this post. It's disappointing, the series has been going downhill lately. First was the mediocre Roller Coaster Tycoon 3D, now this. It just goes to show, nothing good comes from drawing inspiration from the likes of EA.

Blech, mobile. I was disappointed to find out yesterday that they're making a new Age of Empires game for mobile. Color me devastated, I'm not gonna play any mobile crap. I occasionally pick up a mobile game and play off and on, but I never spend money on any of them, so the games don't tend to work for me at all...
