The internet is ablaze with rumors that Microsoft and development studio 343 industries are working on a remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved. Supposedly, the game will be built on the Halo: Reach engine, and Microsoft plans to put out the new/old Halo during the holidays in 2011, to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the release of the original Halo. This will be an intermediary release to slake the thirst of fans before the 2012 release of Halo 4.
The source of the rumor is "industry chatter" reported in the new Games Master magazine out of the U.K., so you can take this with a gigantic grain of salt, although Microsoft has responded to the rumors with a slightly tantalizing quote:
That's not quite a "no comment," but far from anything like a confirmation.
Last month Microsoft Game Studios Corporate Vice President recently spoke about the possibility of a Halo HD remake, saying:
That doesn't sound too positive about the prospect of a Halo remake, so, for now, this rumor is very shaky (in my opinion.) I also have to ask: Why even bother? We recently played a little original Halo around the office, and, gameplay wise, it's still pretty much perfect, and other than incremental improvements, at its core level, the original Halo is pretty much the same as "current gen" versions of Halo, so what's the point of a remake?
