We've seen our fair share of pre-product announcement rumors, but the PSP 2 is well on its way to rivaling the iPhone in terms of the frequency and volume of speculative buzz. In the past month there have been a series of reports regarding the sequel to the popular handheld, beginning with some details we caught wind of in January. We heard from several sources that Sony was taking a touch screen approach with the next system, but just this week VG247, a gaming blog, posted a report stating that the new iteration will have a sliding screen, although they maintained that it will be in the form of a PSP-4000, not a PSP 2.
Yesterday, only a few days after the sliding screen reports first broke, video game designer, David Perry, made a post on his Twitter account with the latest PSP 2 rumor.
"I hear Sony finally has the PSP 2," Perry wrote. "And thank goodness they've removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive."
Although Perry didn't list a source for the rumor, and as usual, Sony refused to comment, we're not quite sure what to make of this latest speculation. The absence of a UMD drive certainly makes sense, as Sony has been positioning the PlayStation Store for digitally distributed PSP games over the last year.
This topic has definitely been causing a stir in the gaming hardware space, but we've yet to hear anything official from Sony. If the PSP 2 is as real as our sources and others say it is, we'll more than likely see a formal announcement later this year, perhaps even as early as E3.
